Gegar Joran Melaka 2026 is a Sunday fishing contest at Tasik Ayer Keroh on 18 October, 09:00 to 13:00. Entry is RM40 a rod, two hooks allowed. First prize is RM4,000. This is not Jonker, and it is not a heritage parade. It is the local lake across from the zoo, in its second year, run by Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya with Nadi Media Events.
Yang Dipertua MPHTJ Datuk Sapiah Haron told Kosmo and Malaysia Gazette the point is to put Tasik Ayer Keroh on the recreation map for people who already drive out here for the zoo and the botanical garden. Visit Malaysia Year 2026 is the banner. The useful detail is smaller. They stocked the lake on Tuesday 13 October with almost 100 kg of local baung, each fish a kilogram or under, plus 10,000 fry of lampam sungai, terbul, and sebarau.
What you are fishing, and what you win
The lake already holds patin, keli, toman, haruan, ikan raja, and tilapia in mixed sizes. That mix is forgiving if you are casual and still interesting if you are not. Places 1 to 3 take RM4,000, RM1,000, and RM500. Places 4 to 80 each take RM70. There is a lucky draw on top. The organiser contact listed for registration is 013-266 7011.
If 80 paying rods show up, that is a crowded bank. Bring your own shade. The photographs from this week already show umbrellas, folding chairs, and people standing shoulder to shoulder on the grass. Come at 09:00 if you want a patch of bank that is not already taken.
I would not treat this as a spectator sport with a grandstand. You watch from the same grass. Kids can wander the lake path. They should not wander behind a backcast.
If you are not holding a rod
The lake is the quiet half of an Ayer Keroh weekend. Taman Botanikal Melaka is free, across the way from Wonderland. Zoo Melaka is the paid family stop, with a separate night safari on the first Saturday of each month. 7 November is the next of those, under the RM10 Bila Larut Malam ticket, not this Sunday.
Sunday 18 October is a working weekend for the heritage core as well. Jonker's night market still runs Friday to Sunday. If you fish in the morning, you can be back in Bandar Hilir for the evening stalls without pretending the lake is a tourist monument.
