Melaka Confirms Free Entry to Tourism Spots on National Day, 31 August
Melaka has confirmed free entry to selected state tourism products on 31 August 2026, in conjunction with Hari Kebangsaan celebrations. The offer, announced on 15 July, was originally scheduled for 20 February to mark the 1956 proclamation of independence in Banda Hilir, but was moved because the February date fell during Ramadan. National Day gives visitors more suitable conditions and a bigger celebration to fold the free entry into.
The full list of participating attractions for 31 August has not been released at the time of the announcement. More venues and conditions are expected closer to the date. This is a recurring promotion, and past editions have rotated through venues such as Menara Taming Sari, Zoo Melaka, the Melaka River Cruise, and PERZIM's museums. Past rounds have also carried per-venue conditions, like daily visitor caps or blackout days on certain boat trips, so once the 2026 lineup is confirmed, a quick check of each venue's own terms is worth the two minutes.
Stack it with the RM5 Tourism Passport
If you are visiting Melaka this year regardless of the exact date, the state's RM5 Tourism Passport is still on sale and offers discounts across 63 tourism products. Between that and a free National Day entry day, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the cheaper stretches to see Melaka's big attractions in recent memory.
The Tourism Passport is a separate programme from the National Day free entry. It runs through the calendar year, not just on 31 August, and covers a wider net of attractions, hotels, restaurants, and shopping centres. The passport unlocks discounts of up to 80% at participating venues, with savings of up to RM268 per visitor. For anyone planning a multi-stop trip, the two stack: passport discounts on paid days, free entry on National Day itself.
Why National Day and not 20 February
The original February date commemorates the 1956 proclamation in Banda Hilir of the Federation of Malaya's independence date, a Melaka-specific historical milestone. In 2026, that date fell during Ramadan, when visitor conditions, opening hours, and the experience of daytime attraction visits are more constrained. The state moved the free-entry initiative to Hari Kebangsaan on 31 August to give visitors better conditions while respecting the fasting month. The bigger National Day celebrations, centred at Klebang, give the free entry a larger event to sit inside.
