Festival Sungai Melaka finally has a closing date. Pesta Pantai Tanjung Bidara runs Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September 2026 on Melaka's west coast, about ten minutes from Masjid Tanah. TourismMelaka confirmed the window on 2 September. PPSPM, the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation, wants the beach weekend to become the annual full stop after three months of river and lake events.
Alor Gajah first, then the beach
The coast is not the only September stop. A D'Bendang fishing competition is listed for 5 September at Taboh Naning. A freshwater prawn fishing contest sits on 6 September at Ayer Limau, with a decorated boat competition on 12 September at the same stretch. The state government's WRUR poster for Alor Gajah also piles kids' pageants, konda-kondi, net-casting, a fun walk and traditional board games onto 12 and 13 September. Treat those as kampung-day programmes, not ticketed shows. Times were still posted as poster blocks, not a minute-by-minute public timetable.
That matches how the festival has run since 14 June. PPSPM chief executive Shaharul Azuar Idris told Melaka Hari Ini the 2026 edition was the first to cover all three districts for more than three months: Melaka Tengah, Jasin and Alor Gajah. The June launch put a Hunan friendship dragon boat into the Melaka River at Quayside. The 41st dragon boat races on 27 and 28 June drew 115 teams from five countries. A kuih keria cook-off later took a Malaysia Book of Records mark at 10,670 pieces. The beach weekend is the leftover piece that did not have dates until this month.
What you actually get at Tanjung Bidara
Organisers have promised jetski displays and water sports at low rates over the three days. That is the visitor hook. Past Pesta Pantai editions at the same beach ran tug of war, greasy pole, sack races and evening stage shows. PPSPM has not published a 2026 hour-by-hour grid yet, so go for a half-day on the sand, not a timed ticket. The casuarina shade and the tiled padang by the gazebo are the bits that work if you have children who will not last three hours in the water.
Tanjung Bidara is a working local beach, not a resort strip. The sea is the Straits, so it is brown-green rather than postcard blue. Bring cash for snacks. Public toilets exist but they are not the reason you came. If you only have one coastal day in Melaka this month, this is the one with a programme attached. Klebang is closer to town and better for a sunset drink. Bidara is the one with a festival.
Getting there from Bandar Hilir
From Dutch Square the drive is 35 to 45 minutes via the Masjid Tanah road, depending on weekend traffic. Grab will do it. There is no useful bus if you are on a tight schedule. Pair a morning Melaka River Cruise in the UNESCO core with an afternoon on the beach if you want both halves of the festival in one trip. Do not try to squeeze Jonker night market, the cruise and Bidara into the same Saturday. You will spend it in a car.
Malaysia Day on Wednesday 16 September is a quieter midweek public holiday, two days before the beach opening. Use it for museums. Save Friday 18 September for the coast if you can only pick one festival day.
