A Chef's Confession is a walk-through murder mystery dinner set in 1930s Malaya, running across selected weekends from 11 July to 15 August 2026 at The Garden@Heeren, a heritage Peranakan venue on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Tickets are RM189 plus booking fees, the show runs roughly two and a half hours with no intermission, and several sittings are already sold out.

The premise is simple and well-executed. Guests arrive at a heritage shophouse on Heeren Street, sit down to a shared Peranakan dinner of eight, and then a death interrupts the meal. From there, the room splits into groups to move through the house, meet in-character suspects, hunt for clues, and try to name the killer before the night closes. There are two alternate endings: the first two weekends resolve one way, the final weekends another, so a returning guest genuinely gets a different night out.

The cast and the room

Director Wee Shyre May leads a cast of five actors playing suspects in a 1930s restaurant. Francis Augustine plays Detective Raymond, the investigator guests assist; Sonia Lee is Miss Irene; Lee You Meng is Baba Pang, a role played with a believable elderly weight; Elijah Skye is Peter Pang; and Neena Shu plays Mama Maria. The show is performed primarily in English with some Bahasa Malaysia, and the actors are trained to stay in character whether guests lean into role-play or simply observe.

The venue does a lot of the work. The Garden@Heeren is a sister establishment to the Peranakan Mansion Melaka, set inside an actual heritage house on the street most visitors know as Heeren Street. Walking through its rooms to interrogate suspects is a different experience from watching a stage show. The setting reveals details and dimensions a single-perspective view would miss.

What is on the table

Dinner is served before the mystery begins, sharing-style at tables of eight. The menu is authentic, pork-free Peranakan cuisine by The Garden@Heeren, built around traditional dishes: pie tee, pongteh chicken, and siakap chin chuan among them. A vegetarian bento is available on request, though the vegetarian set does contain garlic and onion. Dietary requests must be flagged at the time of booking. Additional beverages are sold on the night.

Dress is part of the invitation. Vintage, Peranakan, or 1930s-inspired attire is encouraged. Think broderie kebaya, sarong, batik, suspenders, and oxford shoes. Guests who choose to role-play receive a character briefing and cue cards on arrival, detailing what to ask and who to press. Those who prefer to watch are equally welcome.
