Melaka's Sky Turns Into a Three-Day Kite Spectacle This Weekend
The Festival Layang-Layang Antarabangsa dan Karnival Usahawan Negeri Melaka 2026 runs from 17 to 19 July at Tarcor Park in Limbongan, bringing 209 kite flyers from 36 countries to a single field on the outskirts of Melaka's heritage core. Entry is free, gates open at 11am, and the sky stays busy until 9pm each night.
For three days, Tarcor Park becomes the largest open-air kite gallery in Malaysia. Over 100 world-class kite masters from Greece, China, France, Taiwan and beyond fly giant show kites by day, then switch to illuminated "Night Glow Kites" after dark, lighting the whole park up in a slow, drifting display that is genuinely hard to photograph well and impossible to forget. Running alongside the flying is a State Entrepreneurs Carnival with more than 30 food and business booths, plus a photography competition carrying over RM3,100 in cash prizes.
What to expect on the ground
The kite line-up is the headline draw. Expect giant animal shapes, flying dragons, octopus kites the size of small cars, and superhero inflatables that kids recognise from across the field. The daytime flying is the easiest to watch with a family: arrive late morning, find shade near the food booths, and let the sky do the work. The Night Glow sessions are the photographer's moment, with lit kites flown to music after sundown.
The entrepreneurs carnival is not an afterthought. It is the second half of the event's full name, and it brings a cross-section of Melaka small businesses under one row of tents. Thirty-plus stalls cover food, drinks, household goods, and services, which makes the carnival a decent lunch stop even if you came only for the kites. The photography competition is open to visitors, with a total prize pool of RM3,100 on the line.
Planning the visit
Tarcor Park sits in Limbongan, a residential area roughly 10 minutes by car from Dutch Square and the Jonker Walk core. There is no MRT or LRT in Melaka; the practical options are Grab, self-drive, or the local bus network. Parking around the park fills quickly on festival days, so arriving before noon is the safer bet. Bring a hat, water, and a folding mat if you plan to stay for the Night Glow segment, which runs into the evening.
The festival is family-friendly and free, but crowds build through the afternoon. If you want a clear view of the giant kites being assembled and launched, the early afternoon window is the quietest. Weekend evenings draw the biggest crowds and the best Night Glow shows.
